| The applicant must be a graduate student displaying evidence of exceptional promise for academic excellence and social concerns. Consideration will be given to: grade point average in the senior year of undergraduate school, as well as for the undergraduate major; completion of all graduate admission requirements; completion of at least nine graduate hours; acceptance in a degree program by the department and the College of Graduate Studies. | This scholarship was established by Mrs. Ruth Bowdoin in memory of her husband, Dr. Will Bowdoin, the University's first dean of the College of Education. The recipient will be chosen annually. Criteria for selection shall include, but not be limited to, the following: Applicants must be a freshman or above enrolled in a program leading to certification in education, must possess a definite financial need, and must have (or maintain) a grade point average of 2.5. | This scholarship was established by Mary A. Pockat in memory of her husband, Delmar B. Pockat, former dean of the College of Education and director of Professional Laboratory Experiences. The applicant must be an undergraduate student in professional education at MTSU and must have demonstrated a true love for children, pride and respect for the profession of teaching, and be planning a career in public schools. The Christa McAuliffe Scholarship
|
| The Christa McAuliffe Scholarship was created to honor her memory by encouraging a college senior in teaching to pursue excellence in his or her preparation. The award is for $500 for the college senior year. Applications from qualified second semester juniors must be submitted by April 1 each year the award is given. Forms will be available from the institution's education departments, financial aid office, or from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. Those who are preparing to be elementary teachers who have earned an above average number of science and mathematics credits will receive bonus points in the competition. A minimum college cumulative grade point average of 3.5 through the first term of the junior year and at least average scores on ACT or SAT and on the PPST must be documented. |

James Madison Memorial Graduate Fellowship
|
| The James Madison Memorial fellowships carry a stipend of up to $24,000 for students enrolling in graduate programs leading to a master's degree in American history, political science, or education. After completing the degree, the recipient must teach American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary level for one or two years. At least one Tennessee resident will be given a fellowship in this round of awards. |

Minority Teaching Fellows Program
|
| The Legislature established the Minority Teaching Fellows Program to encourage talented minority Tennesseans to enter the teaching field. The award is for $5,000 per year to pursue teacher
licensure. Those who receive the award incur an obligation to teach at some K-12 level in a Tennessee public school one year for each year the award is received. To be eligible to apply, the applicant must be a minority Tennessee resident, a citizen of the United States, and an entering college freshman. To be considered, one must have achieved at least a 2.5 high school cumulative grade point average, and either have scored a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT (or its SAT equivalent) or have been in the top 25 percent of the high school graduation class. Each year that funds are available, applications will be provided in April to Tennessee high school guidance offices, or upon request from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. (TSAC). |

| The MTSU Teaching Scholarship for Minorities was established to encourage talented minority students to enter the teacher education program at Middle Tennessee State University. Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship Grants for Prospective Educators
|
| A minimum of 43 international scholarship grants for prospective educators will be awarded annually in March to high school seniors. Forty-two $1,000 grants and one $2,000 grant will be awarded. Phi Delta Kappa's financial aid policy stipulates that at least two scholarship grants are awarded to dependents of Kappans and a minimum of four scholarship grants are awarded to minority students. The scholarship grants are awarded jointly by Phi Delta Kappa and the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation. Primary criteria used to select the 43 recipients will include scholarship, recommendations, written expression; interest in teaching or professional education as a career, and school and community activities. After-school employment and extracurricular activities will be considered under school and community activities. Applicants should rank in the upper one-third of their classes. |

Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program

| The purpose of this program is to encourage outstanding students to become public school teachers in an academic shortage area designated by the State Board of Education. For each year of full-time teaching service in the Tennessee public schools in an academic shortage area, recipients may receive cancellation credit of 25 percent of the total borrowed plus interest accrued.
